HCC Agriculture Program to Offer New Horticulture Track

Starting in Spring 2022, the Henderson Community College (HCC) Agriculture Program will offer a new hybrid (in-person and online) Horticulture Track, including the new course Greenhouse Production.

Dr. Laura Winstead, HCC Professor and Agriculture Program Coordinator, said “The new horticulture track will greatly enhance the offerings of our program. Since many of the high school agriculture programs offer horticulture classes, this track provides us the opportunity to further partner with and support the local ag programs.”

She added that the track also benefits the local area and is open to anyone interested in horticulture. This certificate is 14 credits, can be applied to the Associate in Science degree, and is a great option for someone wanting to further their knowledge in horticulture.

Within this new track, the course Greenhouse Production (AGR 155) will be offered. Taught by Instructor J.T. Payne, Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor at Henderson County High School, this course introduces students to the concept of controlled environment growing and plant management. J.T. says “I look forward to providing hands-on experiences for students as we discover the fundamentals of greenhouse production. Across our nation, we are seeing an increased demand for horticultural crops as more and more citizens integrate themselves into the plant industry and this class will be a great way for students to be on the forefront of that trend.” The course will be taught on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 8:45 PM.
